About Broken Wings!

OUR VISION:

To become the organisation that serves all disabled persons within our walls with dignity and humility.

OUR MISSION:

To be credible and accountable to all disabled who need our services, creating a safe healthy environment for personal growth in: Self esteem, skills development and creativity, while treating staff and volunteers with respect.

IN THE BEGINNING:

Broken Wings was founded by Lettie Bardone, Maureen Ansett and Trudy Webb in 1998, out of a need to address the problem of adults living with disabilities in society. There are eight million disabled people in South Africa! Very few go to school, or get education and/or training. What can society do to alleviate the problem of uneducated adults that will never work because they were born with a disability? What can society do to help the families of a newly disabled family member? Mental or Physical. A family coping 24 hours a day with disability is emotionally and financially draining, therefore the need for a facility became a reality and Broken Wings was born!

We were given temporary lease of a house, which served us well for 3 years. We have had this centre, in Raceview since 2001. Our aim is to train the people of Greater Alberton who live with disabilities in various disciplines, and to help the helpless in our Centre at 15 Glen Albyn Street. We only have room for 35 disabled at a time. We have a team of 8 volunteers teaching our disabled to do things that a year ago they thought impossible. Crafts of all kinds are taught, along with adult literacy. We also find time for cookery, sewing, dancing and singing.

What do we do at Broken Wings? We give hope where there is none! Our vision has broadened through trial and error since the centre has been running. We have increased in disabled members considerably and we now need to find the finances to bring people from further afield.

Broken Wings is BEE complaint, we have a hardcopy Business Plan and Constitution which we could gladly post to you on request. Our Business Plan contains further information about our Centre and its working structure, and anyone is free to come and visit us to see what we do. Donating to Broken Wings, because we are a charity organisation, gives any donor full tax benefits.
